The 7 Things I Envy About My Mother

Athleticism. We all know I have none. I’ve never scored a home run or a turkey or anything like that in my life. But she has. I guess that’s where Vivien gets it from.

Self-discipline. She eats anything she wants, always in moderation, and manages to stay slim. I’ve watched her break a Nutter Butter in half and wrap up the remaining portion for later. While I slug back five. With chocolate milk. And extra peanut butter slathered on top.

Talent. Alright, fine. I have some of my own. But I’m talking about piano here. Like her own mother and grandmother, she plays circles around me. And always will.

Spirituality. Yes, I have my beliefs. But I’m just not as firmly rooted in them as she is. And sometimes I think that blind faith would offer a pretty amazing comfort in my life.

Career. Even after becoming a mother, she never stopped working. I chose to quit. No regrets. But I have so much respect for the fact that she did everything I’ve done all these years while also holding down a job at the same time.

Drive. Whatever she wants to do, she does it. Even if she can only take a baby step each day to get there. She will always reach her finish line. Always.

Mentorship. She’s been a teacher her whole life. For everything from English, Literature, French, Fine Arts and Music. I’ve even seen her teach Latin to my son, although she never actually took the class herself. Some people just have that innate ability. And she is one of them.

This post was written in response to two writing prompts. (Go, me.) The first is from MamaKat who asks us to list 7 qualities your mother has that you wish you had, too. And the second is from TrifectaWriting who asks us to write something in 333 words or less using the following word & definition : turkey – three successive strikes in bowling.

Ketchup With Us #24

If at first you don’t succeed … try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it. – W.C. Fields

It’s Back to School season so we’re talking about first days today. All kinds. For everything we do, there’s always a first day. And we want to hear about one of yours. It can be anything you want … from first day at band camp to first day as a licensed phlebotomist to first day on a grapefruit diet. And Hey! As a special testament to firsts, why don’t you see if you can recruit just one linker who will be playing Ketchup for the first time?

(Oh, and for the first time, I will be ignoring our 57 words or less suggestion. My boy deserves more.)

20130814-000244.jpg

Kindergarten. It’s a hard enough transition for a little person. And Dean had to do it twice. On August 18, 2005, he walked into his first real classroom to meet his friendly teacher, Paula Naquin. He attended school there for only 7 days. Then, on September 6, 2005, he had to do it all over again at another school, 80 miles away from the original one and not knowing a single soul. Thanks to that storm we’re all so tired of talking about here in New Orleans.

I’m still so proud of his courage. I was an emotional mess. Until his new teacher walked up, all warm and fuzzy, to welcome her new student who had just floated in from New Orleans. “Hi, Dean,” she said, literally outstretching her arms to him. “My name is Paula Naquin.” My teary eyes bulged out of their sockets and my mouth fell open when I heard her words. His new teacher had the exact same name as his original one??? I took that as a sign from the universe that everything was going to be just fine.

And now, as I sit and reflect upon these significant first days in his life, I hope for him the same courage and strength that he managed so beautifully at age 5. For today is yet another first day for him. Today, he starts high school, a whole new chapter in his life. And again, I know everything is going to be just fine. But, just as I was in his new classroom in 2005, I am an emotional mess all over again.

Perhaps I should check his high school faculty roster for a P. Naquin.

20130814-193557.jpg

Good luck, Dean.

I know you’re going to knock it out of the park, my boy.

20120407-223706.jpg

My girl started school yesterday …

“There’s a hundred and four days of summer vacation and school comes around just to end it.”

Check your facts, Phineas. Or Ferb. Or whoever’s responsible for this erroneous little jingle. It seems like summer is getting shorter and shorter each year. I think that’s in part because it actually is. Unfortunately, it’s also because each summer is, mathematically speaking, becoming a smaller fraction of my children’s lives. When I think back on our past first-days-of-school, it blows my mind how many are now merely part of my family photo album. How can that be? How can the time be passing so quickly??? AND WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME HOW I’M GOING TO HANDLE MY BABIES GOING OFF TO COLLEGE?!!?

Mothers are some of the bravest creatures I know. Not because we learn to annihilate giant wasp nests that attach themselves to the family swing set or single-handedly take on Cujo-like dogs at the park when we see them eyeing our child deliciously (both true stories), but because we stare our biggest fear in the face every single day. We care for our little people from the moment we meet them, straddling the fence between helping them and nurturing their independence. We want them beside us where we know we can keep them safe and witness every milestone, yet we force ourselves to give them little nudges and loosen our grips so they can explore and learn a bit on their own. We remind ourselves it’s for their own good as well as our own. And, before we know it, we find that they’re venturing far enough to be sometimes entirely out of view which, although excruciating, we know is necessary for their development. And we tell ourselves, somewhat mechanically, that everything will be just fine.

And it usually is.

But somewhere between releasing their chubby hands to let them “Do it by mySELF!” and shopping for cell phones so we can maintain some form of connection with them, we look up and realize that our children have really grown up on us. Thankfully, they do still need us. (For the record, I will never stop needing my own parents.) But it’s different. And we, as mothers, have no choice but to accept this change as a “normal” and “healthy” part of life.

If any of you figure out how to do that, please enlighten me. Until then, I’ll be in the back of my closet.

Ketchup With Us #23

A few weeks ago, my friend Vanessa showed me a YouTube video that recently went viral. Even if you’ve already seen it, click it now to get yourself in the zone.

Naturally, I shared it with Mel while dining in a hipster restaurant in Chicago. Then, we immediately began taking turns snapping our own versions of BRF. Everyone around us was “cool” so they thought we were a couple of uncouth buffoons. (We get that a lot actually.) And, of course, we didn’t stop with ourselves. We also took a few candids from the general public, including the hostess of said hipster restaurant. It was hysterically perfect. But I’m not sharing it here today. Because that would be, well, bitchy. Right?

Anyway, here are two of our favorites from the trip.

Damn, I look ten years older with this stupid face.

I can’t explain why but it’s easier to make the face when you’re dolled up.

Freedom.

It’s a song by George Michael (the Wham guy, not Michael Cera). It’s also a Royal Caribbean ocean liner, an uncompleted NASA project and, apparently, the name of a U.S. city in 15 different states. It’s a lot of things to a lot of people. And that’s what we’re talking about here today. Freedom. As in FREEDOM fries with extra KETCHUP. (How much more on topic can I get?) The prompt? She is very flexible and loose. Some would even say FREE. As in you are FREE to interpret it however you like.

It brought us closer together. And introduced us to about 70 new people, too. It strengthened our singing and dancing skills. And enabled me to masquerade (convincingly?) as a teenager. It even provided us with physical exercise. Every night. And all for nothing.

I still can’t believe we did it all … for FREE!

Since Father’s Day is tomorrow, we’re ‘Ketching Up’ with dads this time around. I’m hoping that everyone has a good father figure in their lives somewhere. Even if he’s just a TV character. And we want to hear about him. The prompt is very loose. Interpret it however you like. I’m lucky. The choice for me was easy …

Dada, Daddy, Dad, Papa, PapaMan, PapaManSure (don’t ask) … he’s been called a lot of things over the years. And he answers to all of them. Because he’s always there, always willing and always able. “He’s the most patient human being on the planet,” says my mother.

Love you, Dad. Happy Father’s Day.

Summer’s here. And you’re probably reading this post on a beach somewhere with a freezy drink in your hand. Or with your waterproof smartphone as you dive 100 feet below sea level to swim along an incandescent coral reef. Or maybe you’re just home, like me, planning your next big trip. In any event, that’s what Mel and I are talking about today. Vacations. We want to hear about a memorable one (notice I didn’t say it had to be a GOOD memory) from your lifetime.

Over the years, we’ve taken them to many of the big cities in this country. But it was when we brought them overseas that I saw some of their biggest reactions. London, England. July 2009. Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, The Eye, Tea at Harrod’s, Wimbledon, The Tube, The River Thames, Oxford (Harry Potter!) and so much more.

Summer is coming! Summer is coming! And, for many of us, that means traveling more, chilling in flip flops with a freezy drink in hand and, most importantly, breaking from routine. For this reason, it’s the time of  year that people (and by “people” you guys know I don’t mean ME) read more. They’re always looking for books they can grab to read at the beach, on the plane, by the pool or maybe just on the backyard hammock. So that’s what Mel and I are talking about this week. And we want your recommendations.

What do YOU like? … hate? … hear is the next big thing?

I was fifteen when I first discovered him. The assignment? Read three books by the same author. Back then, he had only five. (1) Garp and (2) Hotel New Hampshire. Both also movies. Done. But I needed three. I closed my eyes and pointed. (3) The Water-Method Man. The best of the three and still one of my all-time favorites.

Because right in the middle of breakneckedlypacking up THIRTY-SIX YEARS worth of clothing, kitchenware, bedding, electronics, furniture, tools, pictures, books, music and other cherished family artifacts, she stopped to make a practice test for my daughter who had an English quiz the next day.

Because she NEVER says no.

(Well, almost never.)

I love you, Mom.
